To achieve a successful cetification it is essential that the correct steps are taken.

The certification process is divided into four main phases:

  1. orientation phase

  2. setting up the system structure

  3. implementation of the system

  4. certification of the system

Once the organization has indicated that a safety management system is desirable or perhaps necessary, one need to determine what is to be carried out to ensure successful certification.

The position of the organization compared to the standard is determined by using a baseline. After these preparations, the system must be carefully constructed. Time, effort and commitment of the entire organization is needed to achieve this. An executable (multiannual) policy will be adopted. Also a manual with procedures, work instructions, and forms will be set up: all together the safety management system.

Ultimately, the system will be implemented and can be certified according to  the CSS2009 standard.
